Funded by the National Science Foundation and in partnership with the College of William and Mary, GEODES provides professional development workshops for geoscientists to 1) increase knowledge of bias and social justice issues, 2) engage in bystander intervention techniques using virtual reality simulations, 3) develop faculty members’ leadership skills to transform their home institutions, and 4) support faculty members’ continued development into champions for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Faculty will participate in a 3-day workshop from November 13 to 15, 2017, where we will teach and challenge participants to think critically about race, gender, sexual and gender identity, and ability, as well as develop leadership techniques and skills. The workshop will culminate in bystander intervention training using innovative, virtual reality, role-play, scenarios developed in collaboration with Mursion, Inc. Next, participants will continue to meet for a monthly journal club over video conferencing, where participants will discuss readings that address equity, inclusion, and leadership.
