In November, Wei LAB team members attended and presented at the annual ASHE conference. ASHE is the Association for the Study of Higher Education. This year’s conference theme is “purposes, politics, & practices” in higher education research.

At the 2023 annual conference, the attendees debated and examined the different ways in which political forces have and continue to influence higher education.

Dr. Donald L. Gillian-Daniel was named the Interim Executive Director of the Wisconsin Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (WiscAMP) Program in September. He will be in this role until 1 March, 2024.

In Fall 2023, the Wei LAB welcomed Curtis O’Dwyer and Mark Moralez to the team.

Curtis is a doctoral candidate in the Curriculum & Instruction program at the School of Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Mathematics from Roosevelt University and his M.A. in Teaching from Washington University in St. Louis.

Moralez is a doctoral student in UW-Madison’s Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis Higher Education PhD program. He also works as the Diversity and Inclusion Project Assistant for UW-Madison’s Graduate School.

Dr. Brian A. Burt was awarded the Excellence in Diversity Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Education as a part of their 2023 Faculty & Staff Distinguished Achievement Awards.

This award recognizes faculty and staff members who have made a significant impact on creating a diverse and equitable environment within the School of Education.

Effective Fall 2023, Dr. Selyna P. Beverly will be joining the faculty at Eastern Michigan University as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Higher Education/Student Affairs masters program.

This is an incredible achievement and we look forward to seeing how Dr. Beverly grows in this position.

Dr. Donald L. Gillian-Daniel and colleagues were interviewed for the NSF Includes podcast “Collaborative Strategies for Inclusive Change.” This podcast highlights different projects and research partnerships that are working to transform the STEM field by improving inclusivity and accessibility.

In March 2023, Wei LAB members Dr. Brian A. Burt and Blayne D. Stone Jr., were among authors who had a new article published in The Teachers College Record. The article is titled “How a Principle Investigator Supervises a Student Research Group: An Autoethnographic Examination.” Dr. Burt serves as the lead author, with co-authors consisting of Blayne D. Stone, Jr., Yasja Hemmings, Jon Kleba, Dariana Glasco-Boyd, and Brandon Washington.

Research Affiliate Dr. Shawn A. Robinson published a book titled “Critical Literacy and Its Impact on Black Boys’ Reading Readiness.”

Director Dr. Brian A. Burt was selected to serve on the Roundtable on Mentorship, Well-Being, and Professional Development for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. his commitment begins in 2023 and will conclude in 2025.

Serving on this roundtable will consist of looking into innovative methods for improvements within mentorship and professional development practices with an emphasis on creating an inclusive and equitable environment.

Wei LAB Research Scientist, Dr. Shawn A. Robinson, delivered a keynote speech titled “The Dictionary: A Science of Reading Tool to Crack the Language Code,” on March 25, 2023 at the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) 23rd Annual Conference.

OGA offers various forms of training, certification, accreditation, and resources for children, adolescents, and adults with dyslexia. The theme at the 2023 Annual Conference is “Unlocking the Structure of the Science of Reading.” For more information on the conference, click here. 

Wei LAB Director Dr. Brian A. Burt delivered the keynote speech for The Ohio State University’s College of Education and Human Ecology’s Research Forum on February 16, 2023.

The EHE Research Forum is held annually to showcase the research efforts of the College’s faculty, students, and research scientists.

In January Research Associate Blayne Stone Jr. attended the 21st Annual Hawaii International Conference on Education in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The HICE aims to provide an opportunity for professionals from a variety of fields relating to education to gather, share, and learn from each other.
