The Wei LAB at ASHE 2022

 

Wei LAB Director, Dr. Brian A. Burt, and Graduate Research Associates, Blayne Stone Jr., Tiaira Porter, and Josh Wallace, attended the 47th annual ASHE conference in Las Vegas, Nevada from November 16-19, 2022. The conference’s theme this year was “Humanizing Higher Education.”
Throughout the conference, the Wei LAB team participated in three sessions:
  1. Virtual RoundTable Session: Domestic and International Black Men’s Social Adjustment Transitions to Graduate School
  2. Paper Presentation: Aspiring to Graduate School: Factors Influencing Black Males’ Pursuit of Advanced Degrees in Engineering
  3. Paper Presentation: Expectations vs Realities: Black Males Navigating Independence and Collaborations in Graduate Engineering Programs

 

Dr. Gillian-Daniel Appointed Director of Professional Development in Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity in Engineering

Research Affiliate, Dr. Donald L. Gillian-Daniel has been appointed Director of Professional Development in Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity in Engineering (DPD-IEDE). Dr. Gillian-Daniel started this new position at the College of Engineering on October 24, 2022.
In the role of Director of Professional Development in IEDE, Dr. Gillian-Daniel will advance the College’s vision to create a culture of belonging and inclusive excellence that empowers every individual at the College to thrive. He will work with the College to design, implement, and evaluate programming that enhances the culture and climate at the College of Engineering and supports the ongoing professional development of all members of our community in areas of inclusion, equity, and diversity in engineering.

 

Dr. Brian A. Burt Serves as Panelist at NSF EEC Grantees Conference

Wei LAB Director Dr. Brian A. Burt spoke as a panelist at the National Science Foundation’s Engineering Education and Centers (NSF EEC) Grantees conference in September 2022. The panel was titled “Re-envisioning Research with Secondary Data Analysis: Broadening the Conversation.”
This two-day conference provided a forum for Engineering Education and Centers (EEC) Principal Investigators and team leaders to explore and share ideas that promoted innovation in engineering education, research and practice, with an emphasis on the conference’s overall theme of reflecting to re-envision.

 

Josh Wallace Selected for Project MALES Graduate Scholars Program

Research Assistant, Josh Wallace, was one of four graduate students selected across the nation for the Project MALES Graduate Scholars Program. This program works to support the academic and career advancement of scholars whose research examines the educational outcomes of men of color. Wallace’s work focuses on how Black men in engineering develop their identities, and their transition through higher education.

 

Blayne Stone Jr. Joins NASPA’s Leadership Team

Research Associate, Blayne Stone Jr., joined NASPA’s Socioeconomic and Class Issues in Higher Education’s (SCHIE) Leadership team as Foster Care and Homeless Youth Subcommunity Co-Chair. The SCHIE Knowledge Community is a supportive group that examines issues of class and socioeconomic status and their effects on Higher Education. They work to produce an environment where student affairs educators can access the adequate information, training, and resources needed to understand how these issues intersect within the university landscape.

 

Dr. Shawn A. Robinson’s “Dr. Dyslexia Dude” Graphic Novels Receive Wisconsin Innovation Award

Dr. Shawn A. Robinson, a Research Affiliate at the Wei LAB, received a Wisconsin Innovation Award for his graphic novel series “Dr. Dyslexia Dude.” The Wisconsin Innovation Award (WIA) seeks to encourage and celebrate all forms of innovation in the state of Wisconsin. Dr. Robinson was one of nine awardees honored in 2022.
“Dr. Dyslexia Dude” is a graphic novel series about an African-American superhero who has dyslexia. The series is based on Dr. Robinson’s personal experience with dyslexia. The novels aim is to inspire students with dyslexia, especially targeting Black and Brown youth.

 

Sofia Garcia Garbuno Gives Keynote Speech for MSAN Intersectional Social Justice Collaborative

Sofia Garcia Garbuno, a Research Associate at the Wei LAB, gave their first keynote speech for MSAN Intersectional Social Justice Collaborative. This signature annual event is held for high school students to develop them into leaders that are equipped to end racial disparities in academic achievement and opportunity in their own schools.

 

More Happenings at the Wei LAB:

Dr. Gillian-Daniel and ASPIRE colleagues publish chapter in “Handbook of STEM Faculty Development” titled  An Inclusive Professional Framework for Faculty: Implementing Inclusive and Holistic Professional Development that Transcends Multiple Faculty Roles.”
Blayne Stone Jr. invited to present at the 21st Hawaii International Conference on Education from January 3 – 6, 2023 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He will be presenting his paper titled “On Your Marks, Set, Go: The Athletic Recruitment and Postsecondary Experiences of Black Male Scholar-Athletes Formerly in Foster Care.”
Josh Wallace and Blayne Stone Jr. participated in a guest discussion in Dr. Sulentic Dowell’s Intro to Scholarship class at Lousiana State University in October 2022. They were invited by Dean Roland Mitchell. At this presentation they talked about their research agendas, experiences as graduate students, and the writing process.
