Dr. Shawn Anthony Robinson’s visit to Toronto for the AERA conference was enriched by a reading of his graphic novel, Dr. Dyslexia Dude, organized by the Ontario branch of the International Dyslexia Association (ONBIDA).
The event was held at a public library in downtown Toronto and open to the public. Following the reading, Dr. Robinson led a discussion session that covered topics including a comparison of the way dyslexia is regarded in the United States and Canada, different approaches to reading instructions, and the necessity for children of all backgrounds to see their experiences represented in positive stories.
“Attendees say they were moved by Dr. Robinson’s inspiring life story and the courage and strength he draws upon to share it,” said Alicia Smith, a volunteer with ONBIDA. “ONBIDA is grateful to Dr. Robinson for generously sharing his time to make this event possible.”
